MODERN STATUS: The oldest name for a non-accepted polyphyletic taxon. Polyphylum Aptera consists of folowing monophyletic components: (1) paraphylum containing all Euarthropoda other than Pterygota; (2-4) secondarily wingless taxa: (2) holophylum Pseudorhynchota, (3) holophylum Aphaniptera, (4) erroneously placed here wingless individuals of Isoptera.

COMMENT. Originally this name was applied to a wittingly artificial taxon. Later the name Aptera was used for various taxa of smaller circumscription: either wingless Hexapoda only (Aptera sensu Brunnich 1771, Latreille 1825, et al.), or Apterygota (= Triplura + Entognatha) (= Aptera sensu Grassi 1888, Sharp 1894, et al.), or Cinura (= Diplura + Triplura) (= Aptera sensu Shipley A.E., 1904), or Diplura (= Aptera sensu Essig 1942), or Pseudorhynchota (= Aptera sensu Lang 1888), or Aphaniptera (= Aptera sensu Lamarck 1801, Leach 1815, et al.). However, most authors regard Aptera as a cicrumscriptional name of a rejected artificial taxon, and because of this do not apply it to any modern taxon. This tradition agrees with the universal rules for non-typifies names.
